https://education.howard.edu/The historic Myrtilla Miner Building on Georgia Avenue reopened its doors in October 2024. The building houses the Howard University School of Education and Howard University Middle School. It also houses the Center for Advocacy Research and Educational Services (HU CARES), as well as a psychological clinic that will serve area youth and Howard students. A model elementary classroom will serve as the location for methodology classes. There is a designated area for student organizations that has extended lounge spaces, a gymasium, meeting rooms, and an auditorium.
Miner’s Normal School of Colored Girls was associated with Howard from 1871 to 1876 and then became part of the District of Columbia public school system. In 1929, the Miner Normal School was renamed the Miner Teachers College and trained Black teachers for over 70 years. When the Miner Teachers College merged with the Wilson Teachers College for white teachers in 1955, the new institution’s name became the D.C. Teachers College. The current building was erected in 1913 on Howard’s campus. It was operated by the DC Public Schools for a time before being reacquired by Howard during the administration of President Emeritus H. Patrick Swygert (B.A. ’65, J.D. ’68). The university received an $800,000 grant from the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund to replace the roof and windows, and renovate the auditorium. Final renovations commenced in 2023.
About the Building's Name
The Miner building was named after Myrtilla Miner, an abolitionist and educator. Miner founded the Normal School for Colored Girls in 1851, which was at that time the only institution in the nation’s capital that offered education for African Americans beyond the elementary level. The building will feature a host of new accommodations for Howard students.
