Opened in 1961, Lulu Vere Childers Hall is a four-level structure which forms the north side of the The Yard at the heart of the University's main campus. It is the exclusive home of Howard University's Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts. It is adjacent to Ira Aldridge Theater. Childers Hall includes classrooms, gallery space, performing arts spaces, rehearsal and recital halls, practice rooms, and administrative office spaces, including: 

  • The Al Freeman, Jr., Environmental Theatre (seats 60 people)
  • Gallery of Art
  • Band and Choir Rehearsal Facility
  • Dance Studio (40-person capacity)
  • Dressing Rooms
  • Practice Rooms
  • Recital Hall
  • Department of Theatre Arts

About the Building Name

Childers Hall is named for Lulu Vere Childers (D.Mus. '42). The renowned music educator came to Howard University as 1905 to serve as musical director. She established an independent conservatory of music at Howard in 1914 and oversaw the Bachelor of Music degree program four years later. She was a trained contralto and pianist. She retired from Howard in 1940 after 35 years of service.
