About the Building's Name

The Howard Mackey Building is named for the legendary former dean of the School of Architecture and City Planning, Howard Hamilton Mackey Sr. Howard became the first HBCU to have an accredited architecture program under Mackey’s leadership as director, and the program grew from three students to 164 students from across the globe. Mackey was referred to by colleagues and students as “the Father of Black architects.” He served in numerous faculty and leadership roles from 1924-1973. He was inducted into the American Institute of Architects' College of Fellows in 1962 in recognition of "architectural excellence" and he received the organization's prestigious Whitney M. Young, Jr. Award in 1983 for his influence on African American architects.
