DESCRIPTION:This workshop introduces participants to using ArcGIS Online to
analyze urban heat through a historical and ethical lens. Using Richmond\
, Virginia as a case study\, participants examine how present-day heat exp
osure aligns with patterns of Jim Crow–era disinvestment and redlining\,
highlighting how historic policy decisions continue to shape environmenta
 l risk.\n\n \n\nThrough guided\, hands-on mapping\, participants visualize
land surface temperature\, tree canopy\, and impervious surfaces\, then l
ayer historic redlining and demographic context to assess who is most affe
cted by extreme heat and why. The workshop centers ethical GIS practice\,
prompting participants to critically reflect on mapping choices\, data lim
itations\, and the responsibilities of spatial analysis in public-facing w
ork. No prior GIS experience is required\, and all activities are conducte
 d in ArcGIS Online.\n\n \n\nLearning Outcomes:\n\nBy the end of this 2-hou
r workshop\, participants will be able to:\n\nExplain how Jim Crow-era pol
icies and redlining shape present-day urban heat exposureUse GIS to identi
fy spatial patterns of climate vulnerabilityApply an ethics lens to decisi
ons about what gets mapped\, emphasized\, or omittedInterpret maps as prod
ucts of power\, history\, and choice… not neutral artifacts
