Lectures are one of the most common and enduring teaching methods for delivering course content at the higher education level. This has been the case for approximately 1000 years. In recent times however the lecture is a much maligned classroom method of instruction in preference for more active learning environments. It has been shown that active learning environments are more student focused, increase student engagement, participation and performance more than traditional lectures. Nonetheless, the lecture still has its place, and traditional lectures can be transformed into active lectures.
