About this Event
6th and Girard St NW, Washington, DC 20059
The Howard University Freshman Pinning Ceremony is a signature rite of passage designed to ceremoniously induct First-Time-in-College (FTIC) students into the Bison family. This experience marks their formal welcome to the institution, celebrating their commitment to scholarship, community, and legacy.
The evening begins with the Freshman Walk, where students journey from their residence halls through The Yard and into Greene Stadium, symbolizing the transition into collegiate life. At 8:00 p.m., the Pinning Ceremony will commence, where each FTIC student will be pinned as a symbolic gesture of their inclusion into the Howard community and its rich legacy.
As the sun sets over campus, the naïve adolescent peacefully gives way as a scholar emerges. As the spirit of the scholar rises in each student, they are presented with a pin. The pin serves as a talisman which draws the collective knowledge, courage, and forces of will of Bison from across generations and places them at the command of the new Bison as they make their mark on the world.
The evening concludes with a heartfelt Parting Statement where families and students share a moment of reflection before the start of the academic year.
