Asma Amina Belem Bio:
Dr Belem’s research focuses on the environmental issues arising from Chinese-funded projects in Africa, using the specific case of a state forest in Burkina Faso. The authorities' decision to declassify a portion of the forest for a Chinese-sponsored hospital triggered an environmental civil society movement to change the project's site. The paper argues that the domestic political context played a significant role in the formation of this movement and its outcomes. It also examines the implications of these findings on the environmental governance of Chinese-funded projects in Africa.
Georgetown’s Africa-China Initiative (ACI) events are organized and sponsored by ACI, a joint initiative of Georgetown’s African and Asian Studies Programs funded by the Henry Luce Foundation and all events are co-sponsored by Georgetown’s Initiative for US-China Dialogue on Global Issues and Howard University’s Center for African Studies.
