Dear Howard University Community,

You are invited to participate in an exciting research study at Howard University titled “A New
Frontier: Illumination of the Psychological Advantageousness of Beliefs Using the Neurovisceral
Integration Hypothesis.” Led by graduate student Davynte Pannell and supervised by Dr.
Alfonso Campbell, this study aims to explore how our beliefs influence brain function, heart

activity, and overall quality of life. Participation involves completing two brief self-
assessments, an executive functioning task (Stroop Test), and a non-invasive heart rate

measurement using an electrocardiogram (ECG). The full process will take about 30 to 45
minutes and will take place in the Lewis K. Downing Building, Suite 1124. Eligible psychology
students may receive up to 1 hour of extra credit, though the study is open to all adults 18 and
older — student or not.
By participating, you’ll contribute to important research that could shape future mental and
physical health interventions, especially in underserved communities. While there is no direct
personal benefit and some potential for minor emotional or physical discomfort, all risks are
minimized, and you may withdraw at any time. Your responses will be kept anonymous and
confidential. If you’re interested or have questions, please contact Davynte Pannell at
Davynte.pannell@bison.howard.edu or Dr. Alfonso Campbell at acampbell@howard.edu or
(202) 806-6805. For questions about your rights as a participant, contact the Howard
University IRB at theorrc@howard.edu or (202) 865-8597. Your participation could help
uncover how belief systems shape wellness and inspire solutions that serve everyone.
