About the Building's Name

Dr. Chauncey Ira Cooper became the first Black person in American history to lead a college of pharmacy when he was appointed acting head of Howard's College of Pharmacy in 1938, and then subsequently became dean in 1941. He served as dean for more than thirty years, retiring in 1972. Dr. Cooper led a revolution in the inclusion of minorities in the pharmacy field. In addition to his leadership role in producing pharmacists through Howard, he served as founding president of the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA), a national, professional organization of pharmacists, which was founded on Howard's campus on May 30, 1947.  He became the founding editor of the Journal of the National Pharmaceutical Association in 1954.
